Denton, TX University of North Texas Press 1992 0929398424 / 9780929398426 Stated 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Illustrated by Charles Shaw
The Society had its beginnings at the A&M-Texas football game in 1909. John Avery Lomax, a forty-two-year-old A&M English teacher from Harvard and Leonidas Warren Payne, a thirty-six year old UT English professor and linguist, met to discuss establishing a folklore society, as had been suggested by George Lyman Kittredge of Harvard. The announced purpose of the society was to collect and make known to the public songs and ballads, superstitions, signs and omens, cures and peculiar customs, legends, dialects, games, plays, and dances, and riddles and proverbs. News reporter for KTRK ABC-13 in Houston, Texas, since 1973, Zindler made local and national headlines when he closed down the infamous and legendary Chicken Ranch in Fayette County, Texas, near La Grange, after he made a news report on it in 1973. In fact this story was so spectacular it was featured in two 1974 issues of Playboy magazine, was the basis for the Broadway and film musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, as well as the song La Grange by ZZ Top. Flames After Midnight Murder, Vengeance, and the Desolation of a Texas Community, Akers, Monte
16 Flames After Midnight Murder, Vengeance, and the Desolation of a Texas Community
Akers, Monte
University of Texas Press 1999 0292704860 / 9780292704862 Stated 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket
What happened in Kirven, Texas, [Freestone County] in May 1922, had been forgotten by the outside world until Monte Akers was transferred there. It was a co-worker's whispered words, "Kirven is where they burned the [Negroes]," that set the author to work at discovering the true story behind a young white woman's brutal murder and the burning alive of three black men who were almost certainly innocent of it. This was followed by a month-long reign of terror as white men killed blacks while local authorities concealed the real identity of the white probable murderers and allowed them to go free. Would make a great movie. The date read on the flypage--no other writing. Slight bow to front board. Black & white photographs. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 220 pages; 30236

Crime in Texas, Anderson, Ken
19 Crime in Texas
Anderson, Ken
University of Texas Press 1997 029270478x / 9780292704787 1st Edition Softcover As New Signed by Author
Inscribed by Ken Anderson. The author's royalties are being donated to various children's charities. The Texas criminal justice system has come a long way since the early 1990s, when a vicious crime spree by paroled murderer Kenneth McDuff convinced lawmakers and citizens that the system had broken down. In this book, District Attorney Ken Anderson describes major reforms that followed the McDuff case as he provides a complete overview of the criminal justice system in Texas. Using simple language that any citizen can understand, Anderson describes all aspects of the system--officials (police, prosecutors, judges) , criminal procedure, criminal law, criminal punishments, victims' rights, and the juvenile system. He illustrates his points with real-life stories of crime and punishment. Throughout the book, Anderson emphasizes two facts--that crime prevention programs, stricter law enforcement, and increased prison space have dramatically lowered the crime rate in Texas and that citizen activism is very effective in bringing reform to the criminal justice system. This book will be essential reading for everyone--public and professional--concerned with criminal justice in Texas. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 196 pages; 30102; Signed by Author

Georgetown, TX Georgetown Press 2008 0964442140 / 9780964442146 1st Edition; 1st Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Signed by Author
During the 1920's, the Ku Klux Klan was a national power, active in all 48 states, with 3 million members. In Texas, the Klan had 170, 000 members. Dan Moody obtained the first convictions and prison sentences against the 1920's version of the KKK. He then rallied public opinion against the Klan in a race for state attorney general. Moody defeated the Klan candidate in a run-off election. The New York Times would later declare Moody's victory "the death-knell of Klan domination" in Texas. At age 33, Moody was elected Texas' youngest governor. He was born and raised in Taylor, Texas and among the b/w photos, is a picture of the Moody Mansion, still open to the public and where Ken Anderson held his book-signing appearance in 2008. Inscription from Ken Anderson to Taylor's former Historian. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 194 pages; 31348; Signed by Author
