Uses Of The Seas, Gullion, Edmund A. , Ed.
10 Uses Of The Seas
Gullion, Edmund A. , Ed.
Prentice-Hall 1968 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket
A protein harvest from the seas. Oil wells 285 feet underwater. Entire submarine cities. A fantastic vehicle that gathers minerals from the ocean floor. These and other technological marvels could easily start a new era of thoughtless imperialism. As President Lyndon Johnson has warned, "We must be careful to avoid a race to grab and hold the lands under the high seas." The contributors to this volume agree, and urge that the United States explore in advance the political and military defenses against such a threat. Review slip laid in. Also laid in is publisher's newsletter about this book. Charts, tables, graphs, maps. DJ in mylar. ; The American Assembly, Columbia University Series; 8vo - 8" to 9" tall; 202 pages; 13273

12 Yachting, A Turn Of The Century Treasury
Meisel, Tony (Ed. )
Secaucus, NJ Castle 1987 1555212085 / 9781555212087 Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket
From its beginnings in the 18th century, yachting has been perceived as a sport for the wealthy. And, except for the eccentric who sailed for personal gain or challenge in a small boat, most pleasure boating in the 19th century was devoted to racing under a variety of rules or rather grand cruising from harbor to harbor in comfort and safety. There were exceptions to this, of course: Commodore Vanderbilt's grand tour of Europe replete with servants, marble vanities, evening song fests; Howard Blackburn's small boat voyages across the Atlantic; and, most famous of all, Joshua Slocum's pioneering circumnavigation in a rebuilt oyster smack. ? This was a time of commercial fishing fleets. The technique and vocabulary of sail was commonplace to those who manned these ships. It was from these ships and the experience of their crews that many of the models for yachting's finest vessels were derived. From the time of Edward Burgess on through John Alden in the 1940's, the schooner was a model for all that signifies the best plying the seas under sail. Small boat cruising and racing - and small is a relative term, anything under 100-feet was considered unseaworthily small before WWI - for most meant Sunday afternoon sails around the bay. After all, boat ownership was rather more onerous at the turn of the century than it is today. Real wood, hemp and manila, flax and canvas sails, iron strapping and wood blocks demanded a degree of sacrifice usually delegated to a paid hand. Turn-of-the-century yachting was a period of enormous energy, development, and transformation. It was a time which changed the face of the sport forever. And though some of it may seem horribly old-fashioned and hypercautious by today's standards, one must remember that then it was but an extension of a common commercial pursuit. Development was all. The latest advances in rigs and hull forms, sails and go-fast gadgets preoccupied the sailor of the 1890's as much as it does the yachtsman of today. Previous owner's name. ; Small 4to - 9" to 11" tall; 477 pages; 19581
