Mister Jelly Roll The Fortunes of Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans Creole and ''inventor of Jazz", Lomax, Alan
16 Mister Jelly Roll The Fortunes of Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans Creole and ''inventor of Jazz"
Lomax, Alan
Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1950 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good- with no dust jacket
A wonderful book about a great muscian, valuable for its content more than the condition. An uncancelled 32-cent postage stamp commemorative of Jelly Roll Morton pasted to title page. Page 247/248 is b/w profile of Jelly Roll. His arrangement, complete with his ad libs, of the song titled "Mamie's Blues" written by Mamie Desdume (3 pages) ; "Winin' Boy Blues" followed by one lyric poem; "The Naked Dance" (no words) ; "King Porter Stomp" and many more including the ever famous "Jelly Roll Blues". Map endpapers showing the Guide to Jelly Roll's New Orleans around 1900. Book is solid and straight. Some biopredation on spine, less so on top front board and rear board. Front panel and flap of DJ laid in. Also laid in are two newspaper clippings (one is about copyrighting musical notes with pic of Louie 'Satchmo' Armstrong) ; xerox copy of article in Texas Observer, 2003; a subscription card to the Texas Observer with notes about jazz and the blues. Another 'article' (from where it doesn't say) pasted to page 318 continuing on rear free endpaper. Underlinings and marginalia abound in this book. It isn't a far reach to say that the previous owner of this book was a devout fan of Jelly Roll (Ferdinand J. Morton). Part of a large estate of an avid reader and collector of books who obviously read every one of them, the clue being that they all have some amount of marginalia and underlining and the date read on the flypage. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 318 pages; 30231
