Adams, Ramon, F.
The Macmillan Company, New York: . 1961 1st Edition; 1st Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket Illustrated by Nick Eggenhofer
An authentic look at the 'real' cowboys, not the gunslinger guys of TV and film. The author has captured the lingo of the range, the slang and idiom of the prairie, the lilt of sagebrush and mesa. Apache Gold And Yaqui Silver, Dobie, J. Frank
3 Apache Gold And Yaqui Silver
Dobie, J. Frank
University of Texas Press 1985 0292703813 / 9780292703810 Softcover Very Good Illustrated by Tom Lea
Buried vaults stacked with gold bars, secret caches of coins and jewels plundered from the Spaniards and the Church, exposed veins of ore with nuggets the size of turkey eggs. Guarded by the bones of dead men, the legendary treasures of the Southwest still wait for those foolhardy or desperate enough to seek them. Death is the cure for gold fever, and the lucky few who saw the riches and lived to tell of them spent the rest of their lives searching, haunted by faulty memories, changed landscapes, and quirks of fate. It is the stories of these men and the wealth they pursued that J. Frank Dobie tells in Apache Gold and Yaqui Silver. In this masterful collection of tales, Dobie introduces us to Pedro Loco, General Mexhuira's ghost, the German, and a colorful group of oddfellows driven to roam the hills in an eternal quest for the hidden entrance, the blazed tree, the box canyon, for fabulous wealth glimpsed, lost, and never forgotten. Are treasures really there? Searchers still seek them. But for the reader, the treasure is here--Dobie's tales are pure gold. The first award given by the Texas Institute of Letters was given to J. Frank Dobie for this book. Scuff on front cover. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 366 pages; 22620

University of Oklahoma Press 1989 080612203x / 9780806122038 1st Paperback Edition Paperback Very Good+
This is the only complete account of the life of Bill Pickett, the first black to be elected to the Cowboy Hall of Fame. The book is essential for black history collections. Includes a chapter about his time in Taylor, Texas. 12 If These Walls Could Speak: Historic Forts Of Texas
Utley, Robert M.
University of Texas Press 1985 0292730349 / 9780292730342 1st Edition Hardcover As New in As New dust jacket Illustrated by J. U. Salvant
All across Texas, crumbling walls mark the sites of military posts that once guarded the frontiers of Texas settlement. What stories would be told if these walls could speak? Their tales would be the stories of people famous and anonymous, of events portentous and trivial, of lives gay and tragic, carefree and careworn. These walls would tell of the rich heritage and history of Texas and remind us that they are irreplaceable treasures that symbolize a significant and dramatic chapter in the story of the American Southwest. ; Color Illustrations; Square 4to 9" - 11" tall; 64 pages; 29698

Wilbarger, J. W.
Austin, TX Steck Company 1935 Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
The Original was published by Hutchings Printing House, Austin, Texas 1889. When this book was first published, the depredations of the Indians upon the Texas settlements were still of recent memory, and the accounts still possess freshness and occasional ironic humor, despite the passage of over a century. First edition of this book is extremely rare as there were very few printed and even this edition in any condition is rare. 37 woodblock prints by T. J. Owen of Owen Printing, Austin, Texas. Index by names, showing counties/areas, years and page numbers for the depredations located in the front of book. The actual sub-title of the original edition: "reliable accounts of battles, wars, adventures, forays, murders, massacres, etc. , etc. , together with biographical sketches of many of the most noted indian fighters and frontiersmen of Texas." "This volume is the most thorough compilation of accounts of Indian warfare in the Texas 19th century." -- Jenkins, Basic Texas Books. Following author's name at bottom of title page is the statement 'sold by subscription only'. A few of the illustrations are mispaginated but all are present. Foxing to pastedowns, library pocket and date-due slip removed leaving some residue. Blue buckram boards, rubbed, with painted black/white library call letters at heel and gilt titling, are rubbed and page edges are age-soiled. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 672 pages; 21814
