Volumes 1 through 13 cover writings from authors Adams through Young; volume 14 is miscellanea, volume 15 is a biographical dictionary, volume 16 contains indexes, reading courses and historical sidelights, and volume 17 is Supplement 1. Gray cloth boards, brown and gilt title block, top edges gilt, decorated endpapers, tissued illustrations, each volume being about 400 pages. Volume one contains a page stating: "This set of the library of southern literature which garners and preserves the literature and traditions of the South is dedicated to the patron whose autograph is inscribed in this initial volume of the work" and signed Patron Edwin A. Aldermann, editor-in-chief .
